The 5th International Symposium of the Institute for AI and Beyond, the University of Tokyo will be held on (14:00-18:00 (JST), Friday, 7 February 2025)

The theme of the 5th symposium is "Next Generation AI: The Next Breakthroughs and Potentials"

Twelve years after the breakthrough in deep learning, this technology has revolutionized various fields, including science and industry. Notably, the 2024 Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry awarded for AI advancements based on deep learning are a testament to its impact. The progress of AI driven by deep learning continues to accelerate, showing no signs of slowing down, and it is extremely challenging to anticipate future developments—whether there will be new research areas, how it will transform industries and our daily lives, or whether safety concerns will arise. In this symposium, we will discuss the future development of AI with experts from various fields and share our insights with the international community.

After opening remarks by Professor Teruo Fujii (President, The University of Tokyo) and Mr. Junichi Miyakawa (President & CEO, SoftBank Corp.), keynote speeches given by speakers including researcher from overseas, as well as a panel discussion are scheduled to be held.

This international symposium will introduce the research status of the Institute for AI and Beyond at the University of Tokyo, one of Japan's AI research centers, to the world. In addition, the symposium aims to discuss various issues related to AI research. In the fourth symposium, under the theme of "Devices and Hardware Technologies for AI and Beyond," we will discuss semiconducting technologies that will be required as well as anticipated issues on hardware for present AI and beyond. In particular, the symposium will provide an opportunity to discuss issues that are expected to significantly impact society as a whole, such as measures to deal with increasing power consumption, with experts from various fields.

■Overview
Recent research on the brain and artificial intelligence has shown remarkable progress. What are the similarities and differences between the two different types of intelligence? And what can be achieved by combining these two? While the fusion of the brain and artificial intelligence has the potential to create the "Beyond AI" field that surpasses current biological and artificial intelligence, there are many challenges that need to be overcome, including ethical issues. In this symposium, we will discuss the present and future of brain and artificial intelligence research and ask what is needed to realize "Beyond AI".
