What is Beyond AI Joint Project?

Beyond AI 連携事業は東京大学とソフトバンクによる世界最高レベルの人と知が集まる研究拠点『Beyond AI 研究推進機構』による研究成果の社会実装・事業化を目的としたエコシステムの形成を目指す連携事業です。
Beyond AI 連携事業では、東京大学が持つ卓越した研究力と、ソフトバンクのイノベーティブテクノロジーと社会実装の総合力を集結させることにより、AIに関わる基礎研究と応用研究の分野で優れた研究成果を生み出し、更にそれらの研究成果をジョイントベンチャーの迅速な設立などによっていち早く社会実装・事業化を実現させ、さらなるAI研究の発展とよりよい社会の実現に貢献します。

The Beyond AI Joint Project is a collaborative initiative launched by the University of Tokyo and SoftBank, with the aim of developing an ecosystem for social implementation and business deployment of the research outcome generated from the “Institute for AI and Beyond”.

The Beyond AI Joint Project combines the excellence in research of the University of Tokyo and the innovative technologies and comprehensive social implementation capabilities of Softbank, aiming to produce outstanding research results in the areas of basic and applied research related to AI, moreover, to develop an ecosystem for creating research-based joint venture opportunities and their social implementation.

Our goal is to contribute to the further development of AI research and the realization of a better society in Japan and the rest of the world through early social implementation and business deployment of research outcome by prompt establishment of joint ventures.

藤井輝夫東京大学総長 Teruo Fujii President, The University of Tokyo: Beyond AI 連携事業は、現在のAIの先にある先進的な知と、その知が広く浸透する未来社会を見据えながら、東京大学が誇る最先端研究とAIとの融合によって新たな学問分野を切り拓くことを目指すものです。またパートナーであるソフトバンクの協力を得て、研究成果の実社会における活用を加速し、さらなる教育研究の充実に必要な資源を大学に還元するエコシステムの構築を進める野心的な取り組みでもあります。よりよい未来社会の実現に貢献するBeyond AIの活動に是非ご期待ください。

The Beyond AI Joint Project aims to create new academic fields through integration of advanced research, proudly led by the University of Tokyo, and AI by looking at the futuristic intelligence beyond the current artificial intelligence and the future society where such intelligence is widely applied. It is also an ambitious initiative that will accelerate practical implementation of the research results and promote creation of an ecosystem that returns the resources required for further education and research to the University, with cooperation from our corporate partner SoftBank. Please look forward to Beyond AI activities that contribute to the achievement of a better future society.

AI is accelerating the evolution of human beings. We are entering an era where the key to future development is the “shift to AI”. The Institute for AI and Beyond was created with our hope to make artificial intelligence beyond current AI, “Beyond AI” as the pillar of Japan, aiming to establish AI technologies that accelerate cognition and inference, and to create technology that accelerates processing of big data.

By combining the academic excellence of the University of Tokyo and the business development, data analysis, and AI development capabilities of SoftBank, we have great aspiration to make Japan stronger and create a new world for the future with AI.

the Director

萩谷昌己 Beyond AI 研究推進機構 機構長 Masami Hagiya Director, Institute for AI and Beyond: 五神総長と孫会長（当時）が合意し、藤井総長と宮川社長が立ち上げられたBeyond AI 研究推進機構を担当することとなり身が引き締まる思いでございます。AIとその基盤にあるCS (computer science) は、様々な学術分野の原理や技術を取り込みながら発展するとともに、その進歩は人間や社会の在り方に関する深い理解を求めてきました。Beyond AI 研究推進機構も東大の多様な分野の英知を結集して、現在のAIを超える学術の新天地を切り開こうとしています。同時に、その新しい学術の発展の中で社会実装・事業化を推し進め、大学と産業界との間でエコシステムを確立しようとする壮大な試みを始めています。機構長として、その成功のために最大限の努力をして参ります。

It is my great honor to be able to participate in the activities of the Institute for AI and Beyond. Since the beginning, AI and Computer Science (CS) have progressed while incorporating principles and technologies of various academic fields, and its progress has required a deep understanding of the nature of humans and society. The Institute for AI and Beyond has also been creating new sciences that go beyond the current AI by bringing together the wisdoms of diverse fields at the University of Tokyo. In addition, the institute has started an ambitious attempt to establish an ecosystem between university and industry by promoting social implementation and business development in the creating of these new sciences. As the director of the Institute, I will do my best to lead to success of this endeavor.

エコシステム

The Ecosystem

これまで、大学の研究機関は直接的に事業に出資することはできませんでした。そのため、研究成果の事業化に伴う大学へのリターンは特許ライセンスなどの限定的なものであり、継続的な研究が難しい面がありました。
「Beyond AI 研究推進機構」は、東京大学が誇る世界最高レベルの学術的な知と、ソフトバンクが保有する新たな社会価値を次々に創造する事業力を融合し、我が国におけるAI研究の促進と社会実装への貢献を目標としています。そのために、経済産業省が策定したCIP制度（Collaborative Innovation Partnership制度）を積極的に活用することで、より迅速な事業化と、そこからのリターンによる更なる研究・教育という好循環を生み出すことで、継続的な研究とその社会実装を実現します。

Previously, university research institutes were unable to directly invest in businesses. Therefore, economic returns to the universities from business deployment of research outcome were limited to patent license, etc., which made it difficult to maintain continuous research.

The Institute for AI and Beyond aims to promote AI research in Japan and contribute to social implementation by combining the world class academic excellence of the University of Tokyo and the business capabilities of SoftBank to continuously generate new social values. We will actively utilize the Collaborative Innovation Partnership (CIP) system established by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to create a positive cycle of faster business deployment and further research and education using the returns that leads to the realization of continuous research and social implementation of research results.

CIP

CIP（Collaborative Innovation Partnership＝技術研究組合）は、複数の企業、大学、独立行政法人等が協同して試験研究を行うために、技術研究組合法に基づいて大臣認可により設立される法人です。CIPは、CIPの全体又はその一部を円滑に株式会社/合同会社化して事業を立ち上げられるように、研究開発税制の適用により、支払う賦課金について、税額控除が受けられる等の優遇策が施されています。また、その貢献度に応じて事業化益の配分を受けることができるため、組合員にとっては、研究費や知財を貢献度に換算できるメリットがあります。

The Collaborative Innovation Partnership (CIP) is a research organization with legal entity established with ministerial approval under the Collaborative Innovation Partnership Act. Companies, universities, independent agencies or other organizations can be a member and conduct joint experimental research.

A CIP is eligible for tax credits and other incentives under the R&D taxation system to enable members to smoothly convert whole or part of the CIP into a joint-stock company or a limited liability company and start up their business.

Also, the commercialization profits can be allocated according to the level of contribution of each member. This is an advantage for each member to convert their research expenses and intellectual property into contributions.

the Institute

Beyond AI 研究推進機構の特徴は「AIに特化した基礎研究（中長期研究）」と「社会実装を念頭においた応用研究（ハイサイクル研究）」の2つの研究領域が互いに成果や課題、人材を共有し交流させることです。東京大学と海外有力大学の世界最高レベルの研究者による最先端のAI研究を行う基礎研究（中長期研究）と、実務性と機動性を備えた組織体制でAI技術の社会実装を推進する応用研究（ハイサイクル研究）とのシナジー効果によって、AI技術の社会実装を推進し、よりよい社会の実現を目指します。

The key feature of the Institute for AI and Beyond is the sharing and exchange of results, issues, and resources between the Basic Research (Mid- and Long-term Research) specialized in AI and Applied Research (High-cycle Research) targeting social implementation. We aim to promote social implementation of AI technologies to realize a better society through synergies between the Basic Research (Mid- and Long-term Research) on cutting-edge AI by world-class researchers from the University of Tokyo and leading overseas universities and the Applied Research (High-cycle Research) that promotes social implementation of AI technologies with a practical and agile organization.
